Recently holding the sixth National Coffee Day of its kind in Kathmandu, the Nepal-wide initiative carried the theme ‘Promote Organic Coffee, Increase Self-employment Conserving Ecology’ and involved various activities.

Organised by the country’s Tea and Coffee Development Board, the programme was designed to highlight the need for further investment in the field of agriculture, as stressed by Mrigendra Kumar Singh Yadav, Minister for Agriculture and Cooperatives. “We have to give special priority to the agricultural sector,” he urged and emphasised that the sector’s lack of momentum is a direct result of insufficient investments thus far.

Yadav also pointed out the pivotal role that agriculture has to play in the economy’s revival and added that the government should be backing the necessity for the development of hybrid seeds and providing technical assistance where required, to ensure the industry’s development. The Minster for Agriculture also urged that coffee farmers cooperate with the Board to progress their capacity and potential for coffee growing, with the sentiment that government bodies need to pay particular attention to supporting the coffee farming sector, echoed by Binaya Kumar Mishra, the board’s Executive Director.

In other coffee news, the Nepali government has registered the trademark associated with the country’s organic coffee, which is hoped will assure international buyers of the product’s quality. Accepted under the name The Himalayan Specialty Nepal Coffee, the registration follows just a few years in the footsteps of the trademark of Nepali tea, in a drive to bolster its appeal to its export markets.
