Inmates Irritable without Usual Coffee and Gifts

Most people deprived of their daily caffeine fix become a bit on edge – and so is the case for inmates of a New Hampshire, US prison, according to reports.

Some prison inmates in Berlin are said to have come overly vociferous with staff following a delayed coffee delivery as a result of the recent Veterans Day national holiday, with the kerfuffle eventually getting physical and one prison worker having to be treated at hospital for a minor injury that was sustained during the dispute.

Jeffrey Lyons, a spokesperson for the Department of Corrections, said that the incident was only short in duration and that no criminal charges are anticipated.

In other coffee news from the US, a locally-based coffee company, Ethical Bean Coffee, which started operations seven years ago, has appeared in a seasonal and holiday gift guide edition of Oprah Winfrey’s ‘O Magazine.’

Ethical Bean Coffee CEO, Lloyd Bernhardt, talked of the synergies between both parties’ interests, Oprah a dedicated philanthropist and Bernhardt a firm advocate of fair coffee trading conditions. In his words, Bernhardt commented, "There is, I think, an alignment between what she does with empowering people and her involvement in charities." He added, "if you compare that to what we’re [doing] at Ethical Beans…it makes sense."

As a result of the association with Oprah Winfrey, Ethical Bean Coffee claims to already be enjoying an increase in sales, with hopes that this trend will continue further as additional awareness is generated.
