Tairawhiti plays its part in World Fair Trade Day

The world is joining forces to help the poorer members of the global society. Trade Aid seeks to redress imbalances in the negotiation of products from farmers and producers in the poorer countries, where perhaps these farmers and producers are not in a position to negotiate the best deal for themselves. On World Fairtrade Day, all over the world, events and campaigns are being organised to raise the profile of these issues and promote the Fairtrade organisation and Fairtrade products.
Tairawhiti in New Zealand is also contributing to this project. What is happening? Tairawhiti Trade Aid has an open house in the morning, tempting in the public by offering samples of coffee and food to demonstrate how tasty Fairtrade products are. Fairtrade also certified chocolate and goodies baked with Fairtrade produce will be on offer, together with a collection of handicrafts such as jewellery and products for the home.
Tairawhiti Trade Aid is a devoted supporter of the movement – it has been up and running and flying the Fairtrade banner for around two decades and is supported by a network of 26 volunteers.
The Fairtrade organisation – as well as insisting on stringent criteria in terms of trade terms – also plays a part in promoting improvements in the local communities, such as education and medical provision. The success of the organisation shows that the world is listening and wants to play its part too.
