Wake up and smell the coffee

Smells matter. They just do. Perfume companies earn wonderful sums of money because we want our scent to be appealing, to ourselves and to other people. It’s an oft-quoted suggestion to those who want to sell their homes, but apparently buyers of domestic property find a home which smells of freshly baked bread or freshly ground coffee more appealing. A recent study takes this theme a little further…

As reported in the Indian Express, there has been a recent research project which has tried to work out what people find to be the best smell to wake them up in the morning. Can you imagine the scents that would tantalise your nostrils and launch you into action as you wake up from sleep? The results of the study have found that there is a difference between British women and men in terms of what works for them.

What is most likely to wake up British women? Answer: the smell of coffee. There’s nothing quite like the smell of good quality aromatic coffee brewing to ease you into the new day. And for men? Apparently the whiff of a good fry-up motivates the males of Britain to leap out of bed and launch into the new day.

There were other popular scents which help to kick-start the day too. Twenty-three per cent of women said that they liked the smell of ‘zingy shower gel’ first thing in the morning. A refreshing citrus scent perhaps? Freshly cut grass would tantalise 11% of people and 10% would be motivated by the smell of freshly baked bread. What does it for you?
