Taiwanese coffee clothes snapped up by top brands

Singtex Industrial Company

Although we are used to seeing strange fabrics and designs used on the cat walk in artistic fashion shows, many of us wear relatively traditional clothing in the real world. Cotton, wool, linen… these are some of the more everyday fabrics worn by most of us.

However, the Taiwanese have forged ahead with a new and unusual fabric for sports wear which has been reportedly taken up by leading brands such as Nike, Adidas and North Face.

What is this innovative new fabric? The answer may surprise you: it is coffee. The company Singtex Industrial Company has made millions of dollars by its unusual experimental development. Why would someone want to make fabric out of coffee grounds? Isn’t it rather odd? The marketing manager of the company has gone on the record to explain what the attraction is. Apparently, coffee grounds have a porous quality which can absorb unsavoury odours. There are other advantages too – the coffee fabric can also protect against harmful UV rays and is a speedy-dry material.

The manager has also explained that the clothes made from their coffee base do not need washing as regularly as normal clothes and suggests that they only need cleaning every four days.

This seems to be a win-win situation – a waste product from our coffee culture can be developed to produce protective, odour-eating clothes that need reduced care and cleaning. Apparently this unusual technology has been recognised on an international scale for its eco-friendly properties.
