Bath does its bit for World’s Biggest Coffee Morning

All over the country, the stops are being pulled out for the great charity coffee event: the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. Scheduled to take place at the end of September to raise money for the Macmillan Cancer Support charity, plans are afoot with ways to increase revenue for this good cause.
Not to be out-done, the beautiful historical city of Bath also has plans to raise money on the 30 September. What is it doing? In keeping with its rich historical heritage, Bath wants people to ‘travel back in time’ according to reports in the local press. What time period are the people of Bath hoping to recreate? Given that this year, 2011, celebrates 21 years of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning events, it has been suggested that the year to recreate is 1990. Of course, this is not prescriptive – just an idea – and those in Bath can choose their time-zone.
Certainly there are many historical enthusiasts who visit Bath – those who are in love with Jane Austen’s era can be seen at certain times of year, dressed in appropriate costumes around the city. But for those who want to take up the 1990 suggestion, the local press have reminded us of what was happening around us – Ghost, the film, was just about to be released and ‘Show Me Heaven’ topped the pop charts. Mandela has just been given his freedom and Gazza was splashed across the papers, in tears, because England had been ousted from the World Cup by Germany.
