Coffee morning to support Marie Curie Cancer Care

In time honoured tradition, the coffee shop has been used again recently to raise funds for charity in a coffee morning. The event took place in Stourbridge and the local Conservative Member of Parliament, Margot James, also joined in the campaign and got involved with serving up drinks for the customers in a good cause.
The gathering was organised by Martin Whelan and the funds were to be sent to the Marie Curie Cancer Care. Whelan recently took over the coffee shop, called Rimski’s and the charity was close to his heart – his mother died of lung cancer in 2010. The past week was the charity’s national tea party week, especially designed to muster support and revenue for its coffers.
The local press applauded Ms James, who worked throughout the morning, serving coffee, cake and other treats to her constituents. Local business had also donated prizes for the raffle and local musicians entertained customers at the party. It was hoped that the event would raise around £500 for the charity.
Marie Curie Cancer Care is an organisation which aims to give high quality care and support to those with terminal illnesses and aims to prioritise the patients and families. Their campaign ‘We Put Patients and Families First,’ running from 2011 to 2014, seeks to improve appropriate care to those in need, promoting hospices to be the ‘hub’ of communities. It also wants to invest in research and development to improve care at the end of life and have a wider reach, plus creating ‘stronger foundations’ including increased funds, volunteers and cost-effectiveness.
