Locals use media to save the Cumbrian Coffee Puff

Have you heard of the Coffee Puff? If you pay a visit to the stunning Cumbria area for any length of time, the chances are you’ll run into it sooner or later. What is it? It’s a deliciously decadent sweet treat, made from choux-pastry, cream-filled and finished off with coffee-flavoured icing. And if you’re worried about the calorie intake, you only need to don a pair of walking boots and partake in the local fell-walking or hiking past-times to assuage your guilt.

It has, in brief, become something of a staple for the area… until recently. The bakery company that makes the Coffee Puff made the decision of axing the treat from its list recently. The result? A public outcry! There was no explanation given for the giving up the much-loved puffs.

What happened? The answer to this question is rather surprising. Nothing more than a full-blown media campaign in fact – it seems that feelings relating to the Coffee Puff were stronger than thought. A Facebook Page was created to save the Cumbrian Coffee Puff. On Twitter, members tweeted for its revival. Astonishingly, the local MP for Carlisle, John Stevenson, was also involved – he is the chairperson for the Parliamentary Food and Drink Committee.

You will be delighted to hear that the people’s voices were heard. A recently statement was issued by the Greggs bakery to express their gratitude to all the loyal fans who wrote in to request the reinstatement of the Cumbrian Coffee Puff. The result is that, as of 23rd August, the puff will be back.
