The rise and rise of iced coffee

With the recent hot weather in the United Kingdom, the idea of iced coffee has seemed appealing to many people. However, coffee experts have commented that the iced drink is a relatively recent phenomenon and that it is particularly over the last decade that the idea of a delicious cold coffee was something to think about.
In America, a market research company looked into some statistics – apparently things are getting better and better for consumption of iced coffee. For example, in the States, up to 500 million orders of iced, frozen or ‘slushie’ coffee beverages were made and (no mean feat in the middle of an economic crisis) this is an increase of 100 million orders when compared with similar statistics in 2006.
Of course, with increased interest in the drink comes increased sophistication in the preparation. Some simply pour coffee over ice, but others have developed new bespoke skills for the cold drink. Some leave coffee to steep awhile, while others use a particular blend and cold water to create the drink.
The Evening Standard has recently reported that sibling teams have recently taken the iced coffee bull by the horns and have launched their product, Jimmy Iced Coffee. In keeping with the current environmentally friendly business ethics, the company is based in Dorset and uses English milk (and coffee from Honduras) to create the drink. Inspired by a trip Down Under, the team were impressed by Australian iced coffee and wanted to bring a few Aussie tricks of the trade to England.
