Can coffee affect breast cancer risks?

The Karolinska Institute in Sweden has carried out many research projects into the effects of coffee and recently there have been reports of a connection between breast cancer and the beverage. What transpired as a result of the investigations undertaken in Sweden? Women of course are keen to minimise their risks to the disease of breast cancer so can coffee help to do this in some way?

It ought to be pointed out straight away that more research needs to be done into the findings by the Swedish institution – but there is cause for cautious optimism. Why? The Karolinska Institute study showed that there seemed to be a relationship between high intake of coffee and the development of a particular type of breast tumour,’oestrogen-receptor negative breast cancer.’

Of the 6,000 women who took part in the research project, those who consumed over five cups of coffee on a daily basis, apparently reduced their chances of contracting this form of cancer by over 50% – 57%.

Other scientists across the world in Pennsylvania, in the University of Scranton, also discovered another interesting relationship between coffee and cancer. As coffee has an antioxidant content, it could also contribute towards the reduction of some forms of cancer. Antioxidants, as you will probably know, are useful to protect our cells against harm.

Although more investigations need to be made, it is rather encouraging that something that we enjoy consuming could prove to be good for us.
