Parkinson’s supported by coffee morning

It’s a time-honoured tradition, the humble coffee morning, but it is still going strong and contributes enormously to the funds and awareness of many charities all over the world. Did you hear about the Macmillan World’s Biggest Coffee Morning recently for instance? Another coffee morning has just taken place in Banbridge Leisure Centre and it chose to support the deserving charity Parkinson’s UK.

The event was free for those who are caring for Parkinson’s sufferers and aimed to give advice and information, together with a decent cup of coffee. It was described as a ‘drop in session’ as well as a coffee morning for this reason. A specialist nurse was also booked to attend the event to help with questions.

Parkinson’s affects many of us – probably more than you would imagine. It has been said that someone is diagnosed with the illness every hour in the country.

Parkinson’s UK describes itself as a support and research charity and helps to counter the solitude those facing the disease may feel. They can be contacted via a confidential helpline, or through one of the workers in the UK. The charity also provides some publications to help and makes education and training available for professionals in the health and social care services as well.

The charity is also the UK’s largest charitable funder of research into the disease and it prides itself on investing over £50 million in this research. By 2014, Parkinson’s UK hopes that the figure will increase to £75 million.
