Malawi has coffee success

Madonna has recently raised the profile of the African country of Malawi, with her various campaigns and recent adoption of a child from the area.
Malawi has also hit the headlines recently for another reason.
Malawi has had considerable success in terms of its increased coffee output.
By how much do you think that Malawi coffee output has increased over the last 10 years? Ten percent? Fifty percent? A hundred percent?
According to reports from the Mzuzu Coffee Planters Cooperative Union, it is said that the production of Mzuzu coffee has increased by a stunning 400 percent over the last ten years.
In terms of weight, that means a leap from an output of 90 tonnes of the coffee to 450 tonnes each year.
It has also been said that last year was a vintage year for coffee, thanks to the stable nature of the coffee prices globally.
The president of the Africa Coffee Association has been reported as being encouraged by the fact that the farmers of coffee are becoming more educated in the techniques of coffee cultivation.
This, in turn, may help the African country to move away from tobacco production.
It also helps that Mzuzu coffee has been winning awards. For instance, in 2011, the brand bagged the Japanese External Trade Organisation Cupping of Taste of Harvest Coffees.
The CEO of the coffee company has said that Mzuzu coffee is unique and the prognosis for the future also looks rosy.
It is good news that a developing country is making headway in the substantial industry of coffee production. Long may it continue.
