Valentine’s Ideas

Bale hands

Did you notice that as soon as the Christmas cards had vanished from the shelves that they were, almost overnight, replaced?

Of course, with all the winter festivities now out of the way it means that Valentine’s Day is just around the corner.

In fact, it’s this Saturday!

Now a few people might roll their eyes at this event and grumble about how it’s just something that is a corporate creation. But the truth is that it originated as a liturgical day of celebration in honour of some early Christian martyrs.

One of the most commonly repeated accounts is concerned with a Valentine of Rome who was thrown in jail and executed for wedding active soldiers with their sweethearts. Other accounts follow a similar trend, but it wasn’t until the Middle Ages that Valentine’s Day – as February 14th would come to be known – was explicitly linked with romantic notions. And the man who is to thank for that is the ‘Father of Literature’, Geoffrey Chaucer, who wrote:

For this was sent on Valentine’s Day,
When every bird cometh there to choose his mate.

So if you’re going to blame anybody that couples are skipping down high streets, splurging in stores and settling down for a coffee date, blame the man who penned The Canterbury Tales!
