Sumatra’s rainforests, despite providing some of the best climatic conditions for growing exceptional quality coffee, is also home to some of the largest groups of wild Orangutans in the wild.
The largest Arabica growing area in Southest Asia, the Gayo Highlands in Central Aceh is also the birthplace of the Orangutan Coffee Project, which protects not only the primates, but the rainforest and local coffee farmers throughout Sumatra.
Under threat from mass deforestation, it is estimated that an area of 90 football pitches is cleared every hour in worldwide rainforests.
Large portions of these areas are being cleared to make way for palm oil and other intense industrial agricultural methods.
Farmers signing up to the Orangutan Coffee Project are given a premium price for every kilogram of coffee produced by ecological friendly means, with the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation project also receiving a donation.
By supporting these farmers, not only are you buying exceptional Arabica which is grown ethically and morally, you are helping protect the habitat of some of the most endangered groups of wild Orangutans found anywhere on the planet.
Grown on the Bersih Plantation this limited micro-lot helps promote sustainable coffee growth throughout the world, whilst giving farmers a fair price for their produce.
This single origin coffee provides a balanced, medium bodied taste with and benefits from a stable and humid micro-climate provided by the adjacent rainforests.
These protect the fertile volcanic soils from erosion, providing the basis for healthy coffee plantation growth and the fruition of a deliciously sweet tasting coffee.
