Drinking coffee every day could prevent dementia

Drinking coffee every day could prevent dementia

New research has shown that drinking coffee every single day could reduce your risk of developing dementia.

The study was conducted by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and has shed some light on how coffee can help prevent dementia.

These findings add to a an ever-increasing list of coffee health benefits…

Undertaken to understand whether caffeine consumption has positive effect on cognition.

Published in The Journals of Gerontology, the research looked at caffeine consumption of 6,500 women aged between 65 and 80, with the study concluding that those consuming more than 261 milligrams of caffeine per day reduced their risk of developing dementia by 36%.

261 milligrams of caffeine amounts to three cups of coffee or six cups of black tea per day, a completely normal consumption amount for most average Britons.

“What is unique about this study is that we had an unprecedented opportunity to examine the relationships between caffeine intake and dementia incidence in a large and well-defined, prospectively studied cohort of women,” lead author Ira Driscoll, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, told Medical News Today.

Despite the positive results, Ms Driscoll added that future and further research could be conducted for even more conclusive results.

“While we can’t make a direct link between higher caffeine consumption and lower incidence of cognitive impairment and dementia, with further study, we can better quantify its relationship with cognitive health outcomes,” Ms Driscoll, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

“Research on this topic will be beneficial not only from a preventative standpoint but also to better understand the underlying mechanisms and their involvement in dementia and cognitive impairment.”

The risk of dementia is one that continues to plague our ever-growing and ever-aging population, with predictions estimating that dementia suffering could quadruple in the next 35 years, as claimed by this study.

But one thing is for certain, these initial positive results are just another reason why coffee is the super-drink that you have always thought it was.
