International Coffee Day 2017

International Coffee Day

Most coffee lovers don’t need an excuse to make or buy a quality cup of coffee, it’s ingrained into their psyche.

But with a full-day dedicated to our favourite crop, International Coffee Day is a celebration of all things Arabica and Robusta.

So whether you favour espressos, Americanos, lattes, cappuccinos, iced, decaf, instant or even filter – International Coffee Day is your day to savour the coffee flavour and really appreciate the beverage in all it’s possible various connotations.

Originating in Ethiopia, coffee is actually the pits or ‘stones’ of the coffee berry or cherry. Rumour has it that an Ethipian farmer noticed the stimulating effects of the beans, as his goats had increased energy and ‘vitality’ – what this means to goats is a strange one.

This occurred during the 9th century, but it wasn’t for another six hundred-ish years before coffee started to become a popularised drink.

The Arab world is to be thanked for the major introduction into our daily existence, from the 15th century the love affair with our favourite hot beverage began before spreading across Asia, then to Italy.

It’s here where the ‘modern coffee’ was formulated, with the Italians innovating and becoming the fathers of the modern coffees that we all know and love today.

Coffee is now the world’s most popular drink, with an estimated 400 billion cups consumed every single year.

Here in the UK we consume on average 500g of coffee per person, per year. This pales in comparison to Finland, where 9.6kg is consumed per person, per year! Ridiculous but commendable!

As for the celebration of International Coffee Day, it was first celebrated in Japan in 1983, and is now observed annually as a celebration of all things coffee. Not only that, but it’s a day to help promote Fair Trade Coffee and raise awareness of the plight of worldwide coffee growers.

Coffee growers around the world are facing tougher and tougher growing conditions, lower crop yields and financial difficulties in a bid to supply us with our coffee nectar.

By supporting Fair Trade growing operations, you may pay slightly more for your product, but you are helping all levels of the supply and growth chain to create the best possibly product in a sustainable method.

To help celebrate International Coffee Day we want to point you in the direction of our micro-lot coffee options, that help farmers and plantations create truly special blends whilst giving you some of the rarest coffees on the planet.

Colombian COSURCA Medellin Excelso Arabica Single Origin Coffee

This artisan single bean, single origin coffee is one of the finest that we have ever offered at Caffe Society, providing the perfect backbone to almost any type of espresso-based coffee you could ever imagine.

Fruity, light and with a sweet aftertaste, it’s no wonder that this is a rare bean.

We are such fans of this amazing Colombian export that we even include it in our signature Swordfish blend, but such is the quality, it’s at it’s best as a standalone Arabica.

The Medellin region is famous for the exploits of the ‘Narcos’ but with good reason, as this is one of the most fertile growing regions in all of South America, this coffee has had the very best opportunity to flourish in such quality soil and climate.

Founded in 1993, the Empresa Cooperativa del Sur del Cauca (COSURCA) has grown to become on the largest and best farming cooperatives in all of Colombia, which is some statement considering the regard almost all Colombian coffee is held with.
