Our Award-Winning Coffees

award-winning-coffee

We sell some truly brilliant coffees.

It’s a line that you’d expect to be trotted out. Everybody likes to proclaim that their product is the best around and in that sense, we’re no different. But when we say that we sell some really great-tasting coffees, we aren’t lying: We have the awards to prove it.

Lately, we’ve sent a small sample of our selection of coffee beans off to the judges at the Great Taste Awards.

Known as the ‘Oscars of the food world’, this annual competition brings together leading lights of the food and beverage world to see which products are the best available and, therefore, worthy of being awarded Gold Star status.

The coffees below have all been bestowed with at least a gold star in recent Great Taste Awards. So as we said, don’t just take our word on the quality of our coffee!

Great Taste Awards – Two Gold Stars

Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance and Soil Association certified, our Grand Cru mixes together an unmistakable palate of smoke, nut and spice to create a remarkable espresso friendly blend.

Sourced from prominent Latin American collectives and the PPKGO Cooperative in Indonesia, this high-quality blend was awarded two gold stars in the 2012 edition of the Great Taste Awards. Noted for its smokiness, with a hint of sweet nut, this proved to be a favourite of the judges and has gone on to become a cornerstone of our collection of fresh coffee beans.

Our award winning Grand Cru is also part of our Café Range.

Origin: COSURCA Cooperative (Cauca Department, Colombia), La Central (Honduras), PPKGO Cooperative (Java, Indonesia)

Great Taste Awards – Two Gold Stars

Commended for its tea-like characteristics by the Great Taste Award judges, this Papua New Guinean peaberry comes from the esteemed Bunum Wo Estate of the Wahgi Valley.

Subjected to a fair amount of wind, rain and sun, and grown at high altitude, these beans have a wonderfully diverse flavour profile that sways from dark cocoa lows to sweet, floral highs.

They said: “There are citrus hints on the palate, with some with floral tea spikes. Fresh and sweet.”

Great Taste Awards – Gold Star

With a huge amount of coffee to choose from, when we were deliberating over which Colombian arabica to offer we knew that it would be a tough and important decision. We feel that the Great Taste Award bestowed on this micro-lot from the Asprotimana cooperative vindicated our choice.

Sourced from Robinson Figueroa’s La Esperanza farm near Timana, this high grown Caturra and Castillio arabica is a really malleable coffee that’s packed with some sweet, fruity flavours.

Unsurprisingly, it’s been a real favourite and we’ve worked hard to secure further shipments of this brilliant single-origin coffee from Colombia.

They said: “Interesting…Big on the top notes when hot, like orange [and] zesty fruits.”

Great Taste Awards – Gold Star

A real crowd please, this distinctive Kochere Kore-grown Yirgacheffe attracted some real attention from the Great Taste judges who were bowled over with how balanced it was.

Strictly high grown, this offering has been sourced from a number of local smallholders, the majority of whom grow fruit alongside their coffee crops. This mix creates a wonderful storm that serves up some great beans!

They said: “Nice elements of tobacco and cedar wood on the nose with a citrus – pink grapefruit – spike. The mouthfeel is light and rounded with a very well balanced finish.”
