Coffee stops working after 3 days bad sleep

Coffee stops working after just 3 days of bad sleep according to a study by experts at the Walker Reed Army Institute of Research over in the US.

The study has found that after having multiple nights of interrupted, or poor amounts of sleep, the caffeine boosting effect of our favourite energy boosting hot drink are hugely diminished.

A range of test subjects were given varying doses of caffeine, which backed up evidence that if taken twice daily, coffee has a positive effect on our alertness and energy levels.

The tendency for us coffee drinkers to compensate for lack of energy, usually during sleepless nights, was the driving force behind the study. With researchers putting 48 test subjects through a range of tests to determine the effect of lack of sleep, and effectiveness of coffee to alleviate this sleep-loss.

Test subject groups were divided and were made to experience ‘restricted sleep’, and deprived of around 5 hours of sleep per night. Of this group, 24 were given 200mg of caffeine twice daily, with the other group given a placebo or caffeine free coffee.

After a series of tests to determine alertness, motor-skills and mood, the results concluded that despite the benefits of coffee consumption when sleeplessness nights are a temporary issue, ‘propping’ oneself up with coffee is not a long-term solution.

Although this test was made to measure the effects of your daily-dose of caffeine, and how it helps with sleep deprivation, the researchers did not test subjects with larger caffeine dosages. So cannot definitively state whether a higher caffeine dosage alleviates the issues with sleepless nights.

Results of this research were published in Journal Sleep, and prove something that we feel every coffee lover knows that coffee helps boost your energy levels.

So the bottom-line, make sure you get a good nights sleep and your two cups of coffee per day to help your productivity!
