Fairtrade Fortnight 2018: Come on in to Fairtrade

Fairtrade Fortnight is one of the key dates in the calendar for those of us in the coffee industry, as it’s a way to celebrate the efforts of the global farming community that help us bring you some of the world’s finest coffee beans and ingredients.

It’s a chance for businesses, campaigners, schools, places of worship and more to help support and raise awareness of the work and difficulties faced by those in countries that produce vast portions of our favourite foods — including coffee, tea and much more.

Of course, we do our utmost to ensure that we source all of our coffee beans, tea and more from as many fairly paying sources as possible.

But Fairtrade Fortnight is not about us, it’s about the farmers, growers and the people that do so much to help bring the products and produce that we enjoy day in, day out all over the world.

Adam Gardner, Communities Campaign Manager for the Fairtrade Foundation explained: “Farmers get a better deal when they sell their crops on Fairtrade terms. This leads to a higher and more stable income and can help them break the cycle of poverty they are trapped in.

“Through Fairtrade, farmers can invest in better farming and earn more money for their crops, and make sure their children are fed and can go to school. Communities can invest in clean water and clinics, improving everyone’s health.

“For change to be transformative for the poorest farmers, their families and communities, Fairtrade needs us all – campaigners, shoppers and businesses. The support of groups such as Caffe Society is vital in building awareness and helping the world’s poorest farmers get a fair deal.”

Olivia Mwombeki, a coffee farmer within the Kagera Co-operative Union, said: “With Fairtrade we have improved facilities here and enhanced quality and production – we couldn’t have achieved them without it.”

Fairtrade Fortnight is an annual campaign that this year is running from the 26th February until the 12th March, and to get your coffee shop, cafe bar or restaurant ready we are offering 10% OFF our signature Fairtrade certified products and produce to celebrate the hard work done by farmers and growers all over the world.
