Society Training: Café Leep

Often we get a great mix of businesses, enterprises and even charities coming to our Sherburn-based training centre, our Barista training course is designed to help anyone and everyone get started on a caffeine creation journey that ends in coffee creating confidence.

We welcomed a group of volunteers at local enterprise – LEEP1 – which helps adults with learning disabilities learn valuable life skills whilst working in a supportive and inclusive environment!

Our group were left in the capable hands of our Master Barista Dominico, who took them through all the phases of espresso-making and speciality coffee…

Cafe Leep is part of LEEP1, where all of the adult volunteers are given roles within the kitchen or cafe itself to aid personal and professional development.

An NVQ approved qualification centre, the aim is to help those on the scheme to find employment or other volunteer positions once they complete their NVQ training course – which take on average 2 years to complete.

As always, before we let anyone loose on the tampers and the grinders, everyone first gets a lesson in the origins of coffee. This short overview allows everyone to understand why there are two distinct species of coffee, and where they come from.

Our man Dominico shows the LEEP1 crew the in-and-outs of coffee cultivation around the globe.

Learning even just a little about the origins of coffee helps budding Baristas understand the nuances of the world of coffee beans they are about to enter!

Taste tests and a rundown of the standard coffee menu was provided by our very own Italian stallion, the mocha proving to be the most popular option on offer.

After drinking their fill of our delicious caffeine concoctions, the LEEP team were prepped and ready to get cracking with making their very own coffee.

Learning what constitutes each speciality coffee. There were a few distinct favourites!

A key portion of almost all speciality coffee, milk foaming is integral when learning the skills required of a barista.

With a little direction and some steady hands we had foamed milk worthy of the World Barista Championships in an instant!

Pulling espresso shots like it clearly wasn’t their first time, our Barista trainees quickly found a favourite coffee, and so their signature had to be the mighty mocha!

Suitably impressed, our man Dom had yet another class of fully qualified speciality coffee-making supremos done and dusted within the space of a few short hours.

So now if you pop down to Cafe Leep in Leeds, you can rest assured that all of their baristas meet our exacting standards and have received the Caffe Society seal of approval! So make sure you tell them that we sent you!
