Berg Wu crowned 2016 World Barista Champion

World Barista Championship

Taiwan’s Berg Wu was crowned the 2016 World Barista Champion at the World of Coffee Show in Dublin, emerging victorious ahead of 61 competitors over four days in the Irish capital.

Wu received a Nuova Simonelli Musica espresso machine, his choice of Mahlkonig EK43 or K30 Bario AIR grinder, a nine day tip to Brazil with Ally Coffee, a trip to Swiss Water’s decaffeination plant in Vancouver, Canada, a $500 gift voucher from Espresso Supply and a cover story in Barista Magazine.

We are sure that Berg is more interested in the title than that massive haul of prizes, just look at the size of that trophy!

Wu edged out Japan’s Yoshikazu Iwase of Japan, to win the 17th edition of the WBC title. 3rd place was awarded to Canadian Ben Put, with fellow North American, Lem Butler of the USA finishing in 4th place. Charlotte Malaval of France was 5th and Lex Wenneker, of the Netherlands was awarded a 6th place finish.

Elsewhere, Japanese brewer, Tetsu Kasuya was crowned the 2016 World Brewers Cup champion. Kasuya was awarded the title after incredible dedication to the art of manually-brewed coffee earned him his first-ever international title.

We are sure that this title win helps highlight the true art of the filter coffee brewing method, and hope to see the event grow to similar levels to that of the Barista Championships.
