Coffee around the World: Swedish Egg Coffee

swedish egg coffee

Those Swedes – and Scandanavia in general – really, really like their coffee.

But the addition of egg to coffee? Surely that is a terrible, terrible idea.

We thought so too, but it actually makes a lot of sense once you give it a try…

What actually makes Swedish Egg Coffee?

This might come as no surprise whatsoever, but yes, egg coffee contains, you guessed it. Eggs.

The process of making egg coffee, results in a deceptively smooth cup that is popular in the Nordic region as well as Hungary.

First crack an egg (with the shell) into a cup and stir, add ground coffee and continue to stir the mixture.

You’re likely to end up with what resembles an eggy-coffee slurry, add it to a pan of boiling water and then continue to boil the mixture for around 5 minutes.

The eggshell and coffee grounds mix can be a sludgy mess.

Just be careful it doesn’t overflow and boil over at this point.

After the mixture has boiled for 5 minutes, remove it from the heat and add a cup of ice-cold water.

This will cause the egg and coffee clumps that have formed to sink to the bottom of your pot, making it easy to pour off the actual coffee and filter out the lumpy bits that contain egg shells.

Now pour the liquid through a fine mesh strainer, filter or cafetiere to get that final smooth egg coffee.

Using a paper filter is not recommended, as the paper filter actually absorbs the essential oils of the beans and egg mix, resulting in a less-pleasant, but still drinkable coffee.

The resulting coffee is incredibly rich, has little to no bitterness or acidity and surprisingly tasty given the addition of something we usually eat fried or scrambled.
